Acupuncture Q & A

Q: Does acupuncture (TCM) hurt?

A: No, it should not be painful. The needles a TCM acupuncturist uses vary from 0.16 mm to 0.22 mm in diameter. They are very fine, and do not go into any nerves or muscles. Some people may not even feel anything, while some may feel the sensation of the needle going into the skin. They describe the sensation as a sting like a mosquito bite. In a few cases when the patient feels tender, numbness, pain or distention at a certain spot, that could indicate a poor local circulation around that area. This pain is not caused by the needle itself. As treatment continues and circulation improves the pain will go away.

Q: Does acupuncture have any side effect?

A: Acupuncture improves the local circulation and stimulates the immune system to fight disease. You may see side effects on chronic conditions. For example, a patient that has fatigue may sleep for longer hours during and after the first treatment. However, this side effect will disappear after a few treatments as overall health is enhanced.

Q: Does “no pain no gain” apply to acupuncture (TCM)?

A: The answer is no. The patient may feel numbness, soreness, tenderness, distension sensation in an acupuncture treatment, but it is not meant to be painful for the treatment to work.

Q: What do I expect from an acupuncture (TCM) treatment?

A:

1.The process

Followed by a thorough consultation, the acupuncturist focuses on patient's chief complaint at first. A follow-up session may be required. Based on the condition and the reaction of the patient from the first treatment, the acupuncturist will determine how often and how long it should take to fix the problem. When all symptoms of the chief complaint are gone, the acupuncture treatment can be terminated.

2. The frequency and length of the treatment process.

It is totally up to the individual and the condition(s). In the case of a teenager with acute ankle sprain for one day, one acupuncture session can fix the problem. On the other hand, a senior suffering from chronic leg pain for 10 years would need 2 or 3 sessions in a week for several months to recover.

3. Result(s) of the treatment.

Acupuncturist finds and treats the root of the disease. Acupuncture treatment can result in overall health improvement regardless of the chief complaint. For example, if the chief complaint is insomnia, the patient may be surprised by not just improved sleep quality, but also more stable emotion, better appetite and digestion after a few sessions.

Q: What health concerns can acupuncture help me with?

A: Acupuncture can treat acute and chronic diseases, improve the metabolism and circulation, strengthen immune system, relieve pain, stabilize emotion, and relax the body and mind.

Q: What do I need to do during an acupuncture treatment?

A: The acupuncturist applies the needles to selected points on the meridians after the consultation. You will then be alone for 30 to 45 minutes in the treatment room to relax and clear your mind. This allows your self-healing system to do their job more effectively with the help of the needles.
